GEO vs SEO: The Difference and Why You Need Both in Jordan

Letheio EditorialJune 23, 20256 min read

The relationship between GEO and SEO is frequently misunderstood in two opposing directions: some marketers treat them as identical ('SEO already covers what GEO does'); others treat them as competing alternatives ('AI search will replace traditional search, so we should invest in GEO instead of SEO'). Both framings are incorrect. GEO and SEO share a common foundation — content quality and domain authority — but they optimise for different surfaces with different success metrics, and the brands that will win organic visibility in Jordan over the next 3–5 years are the ones that run both correctly, not one at the expense of the other.

What SEO optimises for

Traditional SEO optimises for ranking in the 10 blue links — the organic search results that appear in Google, Bing, and other traditional search engines. The success metric is ranking position for target keywords. The user journey is: query → search results page → click → website. The click generates traffic. The signals SEO optimises: technical site health (crawlability, speed, mobile usability), content relevance and quality, and authority (backlinks from credible sources). In Jordan, traditional search is still the primary source of organic traffic for most businesses — Google Search dominates Jordanian internet usage, and the majority of search interactions still result in a click to a website.

What GEO optimises for

GEO optimises for citation in AI-generated answers — the responses that AI answer engines (ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) synthesise in response to queries. The success metric is appearing as a cited source in AI-generated answers for target queries. The user journey is: query → AI-generated answer with cited sources → brand discovery (the user sees the citation) and/or click to the cited source. The signals GEO optimises: all traditional SEO signals (because AI engines source citations from content that ranks in traditional search) PLUS structured content formatting, factual specificity, and E-E-A-T signals that make content easier for AI systems to extract and cite.

Where they share foundation

The shared foundation between SEO and GEO is significant: domain authority, technical site health, content quality, and E-E-A-T signals benefit both. A brand that has invested in traditional SEO over 2–3 years and has strong domain authority is significantly more likely to earn AI citations than a brand starting from zero — because AI retrieval systems are drawing from the same pool of authoritative content that traditional search algorithms rank highly. This is why GEO is not a replacement for SEO: you cannot optimise for AI citations while ignoring traditional search authority. The citation pool is built from traditional search authority.

The GEO-specific layer

The GEO-specific optimisation layer — what you do beyond traditional SEO to specifically improve AI citation rates — focuses on: content structuring for machine extraction (clear headers, defined terms, specific data points, structured lists); query-oriented content (writing to answer specific questions rather than to cover broad topics); and factual specificity with sourcing (claims that AI systems can verify and cite are more likely to be included in synthesised answers than unsubstantiated claims). For Arabic-language content targeting MENA-specific queries, the opportunity is disproportionate — the competition for Arabic-language AI citations is thin, and a relatively modest investment in GEO-structured Arabic content can produce citation results that would require significantly more investment in an English-language content environment.

The investment allocation

For businesses in Jordan deciding how to allocate between SEO and GEO: SEO remains the primary organic investment because traditional search is still the primary traffic source. GEO should be treated as an incremental layer on top of SEO — not a separate budget item, but a set of practices applied to the content already being produced for SEO. The incremental investment is in content structuring and query orientation, not in a separate content programme. As the GEO Agency in Amman Jordan, we build GEO optimisation into every content piece produced for SEO clients — the marginal cost is low, the potential upside from AI citation is significant, and the two programmes reinforce rather than compete with each other.
