Why MENA Brands Should Bid on Their Own Brand Keywords on Google

Letheio EditorialJune 19, 20256 min read

'We already rank number one organically for our brand name — why pay to advertise it?' This is the most common objection to branded search campaigns, and it is the question that costs brands more than they realise. In markets like Jordan and the wider MENA region, where competitor bidding is aggressive and conversion windows are short, not owning your branded search results is a consistent revenue leak.

What happens when you do not bid on your own brand

When a shopper searches your brand name and you have no paid ad, they see: your organic result in position one, and potentially a competitor's paid ad above it. In Jordan's watch market, this happens daily — a shopper searches 'Time Center watches' and sees a competitor's Shopping ad or Search ad at the top of the results before the organic listing. The competitor is paying a relatively low cost per click for that position (branded terms for other brands tend to be cheaper than generic category terms) and harvesting buyers who were already looking for you specifically. Your organic ranking does not protect against this — only a paid brand campaign does.

The cost-per-click reality of branded campaigns

Branded search campaigns are almost always the cheapest campaigns in a Google Ads account by cost per click, and almost always the highest by conversion rate. When someone searches your specific brand name, they already intend to engage with you — the ad is simply the fastest path from that intent to your website. Cost per click for branded terms in Jordan typically runs 40–70% lower than equivalent generic category terms. The incremental cost of capturing this traffic is low; the incremental value of not losing it to a competitor is high.

When branded bidding is most critical

The case for branded campaigns strengthens in specific situations that are common in MENA retail:

  • Competitive categories — Watch retail, jewellery, and fashion in Jordan are categories where multiple retailers carry overlapping brands. If you stock Tissot and so do three competitors, all of them may bid on 'Tissot Jordan' — and some may bid on your store name.
  • Seasonal peaks — During Ramadan, Eid, and year-end, cost-per-click in all categories rises as more advertisers compete for the same searches. Owning your branded terms during these periods prevents competitors from capturing high-intent buyers at exactly the moment they are most ready to purchase.
  • After launching Meta or display campaigns — Any time you run awareness advertising on Meta, YouTube, or display networks, you generate branded search volume. People who see your brand on Instagram will search for it on Google. If you are not there, someone else is.

The incremental revenue calculation

A simple way to quantify the value: run a branded campaign for 30 days, then pause it for 30 days and monitor the organic traffic to the same branded search landing pages. In nearly every case we have tested, organic branded traffic drops when the paid campaign is paused — not by 100%, but by enough to represent meaningful lost revenue. The branded ad is not just capturing traffic that would have come anyway; it is suppressing competitor interception and improving click-through rate on the search results page through ad rank and the double-listing effect.

How we structure branded campaigns

As the Google Ads Agency in Amman Jordan with Google Premier Partner status, we run branded campaigns as a protected, always-on layer in every retail client account. The budget is intentionally modest — branded clicks are cheap and conversion rates are high, so the spend is self-justifying. Ad copy for branded campaigns focuses on conversion rather than awareness: specific inventory highlights, current promotions, click-to-call extensions, and sitelinks to the highest-converting product categories. The campaign is kept separate from all other campaigns to ensure its low-cost, high-conversion performance data stays clean and reportable.

"Branded campaigns protect the bottom of your funnel. Every awareness campaign you run — on Meta, on TikTok, on billboards — eventually generates a Google search. If you are not there when it happens, someone else is."
