Setting Up a Shopify Store for Jordan and the Arab World: The Complete Arabic Ecommerce Guide

Letheio EditorialJuly 1, 20258 min read

A Shopify store built for Jordan and the Arab world is not simply an English-language Shopify store with Arabic text added. The MENA ecommerce experience has specific requirements that affect customer trust, checkout conversion, and operational logistics: RTL layout that renders correctly in Arabic, local payment gateways that Jordanian and Gulf customers actually trust, Arabic-language customer communication flows, and shipping configurations that map to how delivery actually works in the Arab world. Getting any of these wrong produces a store that looks international but does not convert locally.

RTL layout and Arabic language configuration

Shopify's native multilingual support (via Shopify Translate & Adapt and the Markets feature) handles language switching, but RTL layout requires theme-level configuration. Not all Shopify themes support RTL out of the box — the theme must either natively support RTL or be customised with RTL CSS overrides. Key RTL considerations: text direction (`dir='rtl'` on the `` element for Arabic pages), mirrored layouts (navigation, buttons, and image-text arrangements that are left-anchored in LTR should mirror to right-anchored in RTL), Arabic-compatible font stack (Tajawal, Cairo, or Noto Sans Arabic are the most commonly used web-safe Arabic fonts in Shopify themes), and numeric formatting (Arabic-Indic numerals vs Arabic numerals — Jordanian and MENA consumers are generally comfortable with both, but product prices should match the convention of the target market).

Payment gateways for MENA

Payment gateway configuration is one of the highest-impact factors for conversion in a MENA Shopify store. The payment methods that MENA customers actually trust and use: credit/debit card (Visa and Mastercard, processed through a locally-licensed payment gateway — in Jordan, Hyperpay, Telr, and PayTabs are the most commonly used); cash on delivery (COD remains a significant payment method in Jordan and parts of the Gulf — Jordanian customers are accustomed to COD and its absence can suppress conversion for certain categories); digital wallets (in Jordan, CliQ and Dinarak have growing usage; across the Gulf, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are significant); and instalment payment (in Gulf markets specifically, Buy Now Pay Later options like Tabby and Tamara are significant conversion drivers for mid-to-high ticket items). A MENA Shopify store that offers only international payment gateways (Stripe, PayPal) without local options will systematically underperform on conversion.

Shipping configuration for Jordan and the Arab world

Shipping in Jordan and across the Arab world operates through a combination of international couriers (DHL, Aramex, FedEx) and local last-mile providers (Fetchr, Mahalli, local courier networks). Shopify's shipping zone configuration should reflect actual shipping options and realistic timeframes for each market — customers who see inaccurate delivery estimates and then receive late deliveries do not return. For Jordanian stores, the address collection flow needs to account for the fact that street addresses in many Jordanian neighbourhoods are not precise enough for standard courier delivery — WhatsApp confirmation of delivery details before dispatch is a common operational workaround that can be built into post-purchase notification flows.

Arabic customer communication

Shopify's default notification emails (order confirmation, shipping update, delivery confirmation) are configurable and should be translated and sent in Arabic for Arabic-language customers. Beyond email, WhatsApp is the primary customer communication channel in Jordan and across the Arab world — integrating a WhatsApp Business API connection for order updates, delivery confirmations, and post-purchase support significantly improves customer experience in MENA markets compared to email-only communication. As the Shopify Agency in Amman Jordan, our MENA store builds include full Arabic notification configuration, WhatsApp integration for order communications, and Arabic-language customer support flow documentation as standard.
