When to Redesign Your Website in Jordan — and How to Do It Without Losing Your SEO Rankings

Letheio EditorialJune 13, 20256 min read

A website redesign is one of the highest-risk activities a business with established search rankings can undertake. Done correctly, a redesign refreshes the brand, improves UX, and maintains or improves rankings. Done incorrectly — which describes most redesigns in the Jordan market — it destroys rankings that took 1–2 years to build, sends organic traffic into steep decline, and requires another 6–12 months of SEO recovery work to partially restore what was lost.

When a redesign is justified

A website redesign is justified when: the site fails Core Web Vitals and the performance issues are architectural (not fixable without rebuilding); the site is not mobile-responsive and cannot be made responsive through CSS changes alone; the content management system is end-of-life or security-compromised; the business's positioning or service offering has changed significantly and the existing site no longer reflects the current business; or the site's conversion rate is measurably below industry benchmarks and a UX audit has identified structural problems that require fundamental design changes. A redesign is NOT justified when the site looks dated but performs well — visual refresh can often be achieved through CSS changes, updated photography, and content updates without triggering the risks of a full rebuild.

The pre-redesign SEO audit

Before any redesign work begins, audit the existing site's SEO assets: crawl the site to produce a complete URL inventory; identify which pages have organic search traffic (via Google Search Console) and which have backlinks (via Ahrefs or similar); document all page titles, meta descriptions, heading structures, and canonical tags for high-traffic pages; and record the current Core Web Vitals scores as a benchmark. This audit produces the list of URLs and SEO signals that must be preserved, redirected, or transferred in the new site.

URL structure and redirects

The most common cause of traffic loss in website redesigns in Jordan is URL structure change without proper redirects. If the old site had `/services/digital-marketing/` and the new site has `/digital-marketing/`, every link from Google's index to the old URL is now a broken 404 unless a 301 redirect is in place. The redesign should: preserve existing URL structures wherever possible (if the old URLs were working, keep them); implement 301 redirects from every changed URL to the new equivalent; and never remove pages with organic traffic without either preserving them in the new site or redirecting them to the closest equivalent.

Content preservation and SEO signal transfer

In a redesign, the temptation is to rewrite all content — often at the cost of the specific keywords, phrases, and content elements that generated the existing rankings. The correct approach: for high-ranking pages, preserve the core content and SEO signals (title tags, heading structure, primary keywords) even if the visual design changes around them; for underperforming pages, the redesign is an opportunity to improve the content; and for pages being retired, 301 redirect to the closest equivalent in the new structure. As the Web Development Agency in Amman Jordan, our redesign process includes a mandatory pre-launch SEO audit against the staging site to verify all redirects are in place, all high-traffic page content is preserved, and the new site's Core Web Vitals scores equal or exceed the previous site before the new site goes live.
